What is a dental implant?

An implant consists of a screw, often made from titanium, which is placed into the jawbone like the root of a natural tooth. Over time, living bone grows onto the screws surface and forms a strong connection. This then acts as a stable foundation to support crowns, bridges or dentures on top.

Any dental disease will need to be treated beforehand such as decay and any gum problems. Lifestyle factors such as smoking and poor oral hygiene can increase the risk of complications. Your dentist will provide tailored advice on what lifestyle changes you can make to maintain the health of the gum and bone surrounding the implant and avoid such problems.
The implant process
At your initial consultation we will assess the feasibility of implant treatment. A detailed examination will be performed of your mouth and remaining teeth which usually includes x-rays and moulds. This helps us to assess the amount of bone available for an implant and create a customised treatment plan to discuss with you. Treatment times vary and your dentist will offer an estimate following the appointment.
Placement of implants is a relatively simple minor surgical procedure and is done at the practice using local anaesthesia to ensure you are comfortable throughout. A period of healing is required following the surgery, during which a temporary denture or bridge may be worn. Once the bone has had time to heal, we work closely with our trusted dental laboratory to create the final crown, bridge or denture that attaches on top of the titanium screw placed.
Following completion of treatment, we will provide ongoing support to help you care for the implant allowing us to help maintain your implant for as long as possible.
